Sewage Map

Understand sewage discharge data

11 short guides explain what the map shows, how spills are counted and compared, how to read live reports, where to report pollution and how to ask for more information. Each guide ends with the action it supports.

What is a storm overflow?

A storm overflow is an outlet from the sewer system. Its monitor records when the overflow operates. That record is one part of the evidence about the water nearby.

Discharge location
Where the source lists the outlet
Spill count
Annual events counted using the reporting method
Duration
Total recorded discharge time
Monitor coverage
How much of the reporting period has monitoring data

How to read an outlet record

Each outlet page joins one row of the official annual return to the latest company monitor report. Knowing what each field means helps you check it at the source.

Permit
The discharge permit reference in the return
Activity reference
The discharge activity within that permit
Grid reference
The Ordnance Survey position in the return
Waterbody ID
The Environment Agency waterbody the return names

Why monitor coverage matters

Each annual record says how much of the year its monitor worked. A count from a monitor that worked for half the year can miss half of the events.

90% or more
Used for fair comparisons on this site
Below 90%
Marked as low coverage
No figure
The return gives no operation value
Missing count
Not the same as zero

Types of storm overflow

The annual return gives each outlet an asset type. The type tells you where in the sewer system the overflow sits.

On the sewer network
7,895 outlets in 2025
At a pumping station
3,320 outlets
Storm tank at a treatment works
1,944 outlets
Inlet of a treatment works
1,131 outlets

How to read live monitor reports

Water companies publish recent monitor reports for their storm overflows. We check them every 15 minutes and show the latest status we hold, with its time.

Discharge reported
The monitor reported an ongoing discharge
Stopped in last 24 hours
A discharge ended within the last day
No discharge reported
The monitor reported no discharge
Monitor offline
The company reports no working monitor

Storm overflow targets in England

The government’s Storm Overflows Discharge Reduction Plan sets dates by which water companies must reduce harm from storm overflows.

2035
All overflows near bathing waters, and 75% near high-priority sites
2045
All overflows near high-priority sites
2050
All remaining overflows
Rainfall target
No more than 10 discharges a year on average

Short answers

What is a storm overflow?
Use the map to find the outlet record, then check its year, monitor coverage and latest report time. The monitor shows operation. It does not measure sewage volume or water quality.
How are sewage spills counted?
Compare spill counts only for the same reporting year. Read duration and monitor coverage beside the count. Do not add live start alerts and call the result an annual spill count.
Can a sewage map tell me if the water is safe?
Open the official bathing-water profile before entering the water. Check local signs and conditions. A nearby or stopped overflow report is not a swimming-safety result.
How do I report sewage pollution?
For pollution in England, use the official online report or call 0800 80 70 60. Give the location, time and a clear description. Do not approach an outlet or enter unsafe land.
How to read an outlet record
Start with the year and the monitor operation figure. Then read the spill count and hours. Use the permit and activity references to find the same outlet in official records or in a request to the water company.
Why monitor coverage matters
Check monitor operation before you compare counts. Treat counts below 90% with care, and never read a missing figure as zero.
Types of storm overflow
Read the outlet type on the outlet page to see whether the overflow is on the sewer network, at a pumping station or at a treatment works. The type does not tell you how much it discharges.
How to read live monitor reports
Read the status together with its time. Discharging means the monitor reported a discharge at that time. Offline or unknown means there is no usable reading, not that nothing happened.
How to compare water companies fairly
Compare the median spills per outlet, the share of outlets with many spills and the change for outlets monitored in both years. Use totals only with the outlet count beside them.
How to ask for information about an overflow
Write to the water company and say you are asking under the Environmental Information Regulations 2004. Name the outlet with its permit and activity references. You should normally get a reply within 20 working days.
