Select a marker to open its page. Each marker is the official reference point for that town or city, not an outlet. Red means a discharge is reported at one or more of its outlets right now. Blue means every outlet in the group has a current report of no discharge. Grey means incomplete monitor reports: at least one outlet is offline, has no live feed or has no current report.

A count is the number of outlets whose latest company report says a discharge is taking place. It does not measure volume or water quality. Outlets without a current report are counted as unknown, not as no discharge.

Highest 2025 spill totals by area

Totals add the 2025 annual counts of every outlet within 10 km of the place point. Areas with more outlets usually have higher totals, and outlets can appear in more than one area, so this is not a league table. Missing counts are left out, not treated as zero.

4,362 outlet records fall within 10 km of a listed place. Together they report 82,042 spills in 2025, and 12 of them have no usable 2025 count. Outlets can appear on more than one area page when towns are close together.

Questions about the area pages

What does the number next to each area mean?
It is the count of outlet records within 10 km of the official place reference point. It counts records, not spills, and a larger town does not mean more pollution.
What does “discharge reported now” mean for an area?
It means the latest company report for one or more outlets within the search distance says a discharge is taking place. The count is outlets, not volume. Nearby does not mean the outlet drains into the water you care about.
What counts as nearby?
We use a straight-line distance of 10 km from an official town or city map point. An outlet can be on an area page even if it is outside the council boundary. Nearby does not mean it drains into your local river.
My town is not listed. What can I do?
These pages cover the 250 built-up areas in England with the most published outlets nearby. Use the map to search any postcode, or select Use my location, to see outlets within 10 km of that point.
Do area pages show live discharge reports?
Each area page shows the latest company report for every outlet linked to a live feed, with its date, and annual figures for all outlets. A report can be old or the monitor offline, so check the date.
